Snow Removal Reminders

Winter photo created by wavebreakme

By working together, we increase the effectiveness of our efforts and make our community a safer place to walk and drive!

Here's how you can help:

  • Clear your sidewalk any time the snow gets deeper than an inch.
  • Use salt sparingly - remember that whatever salt you place on paved areas will eventually make its way to Lake Michigan.  Elevated amounts of road salt is toxic to fish and aquatic plants!
  • Keep in mind that completion of plow routes takes more than one snow plow pass.  Please don’t shovel out your driveway until the plows have made multiple passes down your street.
  • Take care not to pile the snow high and don’t push it into the street. Do not blow snow into the street. If a snowplow displaces snow onto your walk or driveway, please understand it’s unavoidable and clear the way again.
  • Place garbage and recycling containers close to the curb and bring them in as soon as possible.
  • Consider those around us who need some help:  elderly neighbors, neighbors with mobility issues or neighbors who are out of town may need a hand with shoveling.
  • If you leave town, make arrangements for snow removal in your absence.
  • If a fire hydrant is near your property, please help keep it clear of snow.

You can review Greenfield’s Winter Maintenance Policy here and read the city ordinance regarding sidewalk snow removal here.
