Greenfield's first "city park" (late 1960's), the site was originally known as "Squire Park". The park was officially dedicated as Dan Jansen Park in 1994 in honor of the local Olympic speedskating gold medalist.

At this time the site was also completely renovated featuring a "red, white and blue" playground, little league ballfield, fencing, landscaping, and a 50' "gold" flagpole as a centerpiece.

In 1999, through the fund raising efforts of the Dan Jansen Family Fest organization, a lighted walkway linkage to South 74th Street (approx. 370 linear feet) was added to the park. The playground surface material was updated with a red, white & blue poured-in-place rubber resilient surface as well as enhanced play features allowing for greater handicap accessibility in 2000. Restrooms and a shelter were installed in 2007 and 2008.
