HISTORY
Origin of Name
Originally named "Greenfield Recreation Complex", the site was officially dedicated Stanley J. Konkel Park in 1990 recognizing the significant dedication and efforts Mr. Konkel displayed in 34 years of service to the community on the Park and Recreation Board.
1979-1989
The original parcels of Greenfield's largest park were purchased by the City in 1979/80 with the aid of Community Development Block Grant funding. Debate over development of the site ran high for most of the 1980's. Eventually in 1988/89, 2 official softball fields with lights were completed along with a supporting parking lot area.
1992-1994
In 1992/93 the shelter/concessions/restroom facility and large playground area were added. In 1994 the "sand volleyball center" (4 courts) was completed to "round out" current park facilities. In 1994 Milwaukee County deeded to the City over 16 acres of adjacent land expanding the site to its current size.
Walkway/Trail System
Beginning in 2002 “The Year of the Trail” construction began on the long awaited comprehensive multipurpose walkway/trail system within the Park. The trail provides for potential connections to neighboring schools to further enhance park accessibility and recreation opportunities. In 2020, an 1,800' (1/3 mile) asphalt walkway was added to connect Konkel Park and Greenfield High School.
The features of the trail system include:
- 320 lineal feet of boardwalk through the wetland area with a wetland overlook
- Approximately 6900 lineal feet of asphalt path
- Decorative trail lighting throughout the trail
- Educational signage
- Informational Kiosk
- Prefabricated pedestrian bridge crossing the Honey Creek
City Arbor Day Activities
The park has also been the beneficiary of City Arbor Day activities in 1993, 1998, 2002 and 2003 (over 300 trees planted).
